Text Box: Education

Text Box: The district has many educational activities that teach children as well as adults about the conservation of our natural resources.  Some of these programs are:
Students Today for Environmental Protection (STEP) program focuses on Non-Point Source Pollution.  A staff member visits each 5th grade class in Perry County for approximately 2 weeks.  The students are taught about the cause and effect of NPSP with many hands-on experiments.  They are also invited to go on 2 field trips.  One is a trip to a stream to do chemical and biological assessments.  T
6th Grade Outdoor Conservation Workshop is a day long event for 6th graders in the county.  They travel to various stations learning many things about natural resources and conservation.
Conservation Poster Contest is open to all students from Kindergarten through 12th grade.  It follows the Soil and Water Stewardship theme each year.
County Soils Judging Contest is for the County’s High School students.  This contest prepares the Vo-Ag students from Sheridan, Miller, and New Lexington High School for their district contests.  It teaches how to judge the soil for different uses such as agricultural or urban.
County Forestry Contest is also a contest for high school student.  Timber cruising, map interpretation, tree identification, compass reading are just a few of the areas that the students are tested in.
Area 3 Envirothon is a competition in a 16-county region.  5 high school students form a team (2 teams from each school) and are tested in 5 areas:  forestry, soils, aquatics, wildlife, and current environmental issues.  The top 4 teams from each area competition (5 areas in the state) go on to the State competition.
Tri-County Envirothon is a joint effort of Perry, Licking, and Muskingum SWCDs to prepare the teams from each of these counties for the Area contest.
Hunters’ Education courses occur throughout the year.  This is an opportunity for the area’s young hunters to learn the proper and safe way to hunt.
These are just a few programs that the district offers to the county.  The district personnel will also visit classrooms or field days at requests of  formal educators.  The district has several educational models.  They are pictured below.
